The beautiful view from Disley Golf Club’s dining room window over the rolling Cheshire hills added to the warm and friendly atmosphere and Louise, the chef, provided a lovely meal. Neil Cliffe then gave a talk entitled “How I made a million and lost it,” which evokes expectations of the life story of perhaps a computer whiz kid or entrepreneur who made a fortune on the internet or by selling ice to Iceland and lost everything on the horses or the stock market, but Neil enthralled and inspired all the diners with a description of how he raised the funds to build a cancer care centre at Wythenshawe Hospital. As a thank you to his surgeon for successfully treating him for cancer, Neil first agreed to raise £9,000 to buy an endoscope. Athletics had never featured in his life before but he began training to run a marathon and with a lot of hard work and many sponsors he funded the endoscope. From those small beginnings, with the help of some of the cast of Coronation Street and hundreds of others, Neil went on to raise more money to buy other essential equipment and eventually £1 million to build the Neil Cliffe Cancer Care Centre which provides holistic support for people living with cancer, their families and carers. What an achievement and what an example of what can be done with determination and dedication. Two thirds of the funding for the running of the centre comes from donations, and Romiley and District Probus members were pleased to contribute by donating £...
