Capt Pugwash

Captain Pugwash sighted on the Mersey? The summer Probus outing this year was a chug down the Manchester Ship Canal to the famous Pier Head and Liver Building at the mouth of the Mersey in Liverpool. Captain Pugwash (Chairman Les Wood) directed operations, with help from other masters and seamen in the form of David Jones, Derek Harrison and Charles Skinner. Everything went according to plan with an early coach collection in Romiley and smooth boarding of the Snowdrop at Salford Quays. Six hours cruising sounds a long time, but the excellent commentary and enthralling history lesson kept everyone amused and informed for virtually the whole time. What a star that man was, and how amazing were the engineers and men who designed and constructed those bridges and locks all those years ago. The banks of the canal in the past were littered with industry but are now teaming with wildlife. The factories have virtually gone and the scene was of fields and trees with a fascinating array of ducks and herons flying and diving, with cormorants and magnificent swans landing and taking off from the water. Arrival in Liverpool left time for shopping in the new Liverpool 1 complex, or for most just a soaking up of the atmosphere in the revived Albert Dock, and of course food and drink in the lovely restaurants on the water’s edge. Thanks go to everyone involved in making the trip such a success.
